Special Cultural Production To Be Created In Class

Beginning Fall 2009, and for the next three semesters, the Theatre, Music, Dance and Art departments will be working with various accomplished artists to create a special cultural production for the opening of the new auditorium being built at BYU–Idaho.
The Department of Theatre will create an original script for this production. They will be working with former Physics Department faculty member and author Jack Weyland. A new class that will be starting in Fall 2009, TA 390R Special Study, has been created to provide students with the opportunity to collaborate with Weyland in writing the play. Any student with an interest to participate in playwriting can take this course.
For this fall’s course, students will be gathering information, ideas and getting direction for the play. In Winter 2010, students will be writing the script and in Spring 2010, students will be refining and finishing the script. Students can register for one semester or all three to help with this project.
A similar project in the Music department will be starting this fall as well. The Department of Music will be creating a musical score for the production. The process for writing the music for the show will be similar to the process for writing the script. The Music Department will be working with K. Newell Dayley — former associate vice president, dean and Music Department faculty member at BYU — to compose the musical score. A music course for this project, Music 290 Special Topics, will also begin this fall. Students will be participating in music research, composing and arranging.
The Art and Dance departments will begin their projects at a later time when more is planned for the script and the score.
“This production will be the first cultural production in this new and amazing space,” said Kelly Burgener, dean of the College of Performing and Visual Arts. “It will be staged in February 2011 in conjunction with Spirit Week.”
To become involved with this project, interested students should contact the Department of Music or the Department of Theatre.
