BYU-Idaho released a statement responding to the recent issues between Title IX and the Honor Code at BYU.
“First and foremost, Brigham Young University-Idaho emphasizes that victims are not responsible for sexual assault,” according to university relations. “Moreover, being a victim of rape is not an honor code violation. The university recognizes the potential tension between honor code violations and the willingness of some students to report sexual assault. BYU-Idaho continues to examine the relationship between the Title IX Office and the Honor Code Office to further enhance student safety.”
Issues arose at BYU when a student reportedly came under an Honor Code investigation after details surrounding her alleged rape were reported to the Honor Code office.
Since the incident, students at BYU and others have urged the school to change how Honor Code investigations are handled when sexual assault is involved.
