The event will start at 9:30 p.m. and go until 10:30 p.m., according to the Rexburg Candlelight Vigil for Orlando event page.
The vigil will honor those killed in the Orlando LGBT nightclub shooting that took place Sunday morning, according to the Rexburg Candlelight Vigil for Orlando event page.
Dan Melanson, event creator and a senior studying english, said he created the event because he has many LGBT friends and acquaintances, both here in Rexburg, and across the country.
“Now is a time for us to rise up and let others know that we adamantly stand with Orlando,” Melanson said. “I feel that this is a way for those of us here in our community to show our respect for, and solidarity with Orlando, and the victims of the shooting,” Melanson said.
Melanson said the shooting in Orlando affected the LGBT community at a deep level and is cause for our love and support to them at this time especially.
“I’ve always considered myself a friend and ally,” Melanson said. “I want anyone who may be on the LGBTQA spectrum here in Rexburg to know that there are those who love and support them.”
Melanson said he often feels that many here may not see how many others really care about them.
“We are taught and believe that we are all children of loving heavenly parents,” Melanson said. “Now is a time for us to stand together and support our brothers and sisters that have been hurt.”
