Devotional with Angela Watkins: finding strength through ancestors

Angela Watkins, a health, recreation and human performance faculty member, addressed students on June 28 in regards to looking back, around and up for strength.

Watkins said Ralph Waldo Emerson’s quote, “Sorrow looks back, worry looks around, and faith looks up,” was comparable to the desires Heavenly Father has for his children.

“Heavenly Father wants us to look up in faith, look back in times of sorrow and look around in times of worry,” Watkins said.

Watkins said looking back at the history of students’ ancestors is a strength for students living in these days.

Watkins said she appreciated the stories she knows about her ancestors and all the trials they overcame to preserve the lives of future generations.

“I would encourage you to make time to study the records of your fathers,” Watkins said.

Watkins said that if students look around, they can see others around them bearing them up, and they can bear up other students themselves.

“You are not alone; you are not unaided,” Watkins said.

Watkins said she knew students would be put in certain situations that would test their faith.

“Christ knew looking up to him in faith will be our only source of comfort,” Watkins said.
