Devotional with Don R. Clarke: Preparing for marriage

Don R. Clarke, emeritus general authority and director of church hosting, addressed students on May 31.

Clarke shared four truths he wished he would have known when he was younger with the students of BYU-Idaho.

Clarke said these truths will help students progress on the journey to return to live with Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ.

“The most important organization in time and eternity is the family, with the core of it being marriage,” Clarke said. “Now is the time for you to prepare for marriage.”

Clarke said the choice of who to marry will impact every aspect of a person’s life.

“We should develop faith in the Lord Jesus Christ and live a Christ-centered life,” Clarke said. “Heavenly Father blesses those who have faith to believe his son.”

Clarke said having faith establishes a strong connection to Heaven.

“The companionship of the Holy Ghost is the greatest gift that mortal man can enjoy,” Clarke said.

Clarke said he hopes students can learn to recognize the voice of the Holy Ghost and have the courage to use it.

“We should spend time doing things that matter most,” Clarke said.

Clarke said students should actively participate in family home evening, apartment prayer, apartment scripture study and other unifying apartment gatherings to strengthen their relationships with Heavenly Father.
