Education Centers help students plan

Education Centers are located in buildings all over campus to help students direct their education and guide them to classes they need to take.

“Before students come to any educational help center on campus, students should have a grad plan ready,” said Anna Packard, a Human Development and Education Center employee. “It doesn’t need to be perfect or even correct. That is what I am here for.”

Packard said it is the job of the Human Development and Education Center workers to help students by sitting down with them and organizing the classes they will need to take to graduate.

“Coming to any education help center helps students be better prepared to graduate and know what classes they need to take, and we also can give access to a lot of career advice for the future and what classes can better prepare them for that career,” said Heather Petherbridge, a senior studying elementary education.

Petherbridge said it would be great to have students explore the grad plan tool as well as some of the classes  that are offered for their major to see what looks interesting.

“Come to us if you need help planning you classes,” Packard said. “You are not the only one on campus feeling lost. We are here, and we can help.”

Packard said the Human Development and Education Center can benefit students greatly if they are feeling overwhelmed with the process of planning classes. Human Development and Education Center workers can see which prerequisite they still need to take as well as which foundation classes they do or do not need to take.

“Common errors students will make are planning all foundation classes when they only need to take a few of them,” Petherbridge said. “Students also tend to struggle with sequencing their classes so they can accomplish them when they need to. This can be frustrating, but we can help organize everything out.”

Petherbridge said working at the Human Development and Education Center has given her a feeling of great accomplishment. She has been able to listen to students and find out what their dreams are and then locate what major and classes would be most appealing to them and what will help them achieve these dreams.

“So many times I have received inspiration on what classes students need to get into not just because they need the class for their major, but also because of the work they want to go into,” Petherbridge said. “It is a pretty neat experience to see how excited about classes they get to take in the future all because I had the opportunity to direct them there.”

Jessica Perron, a junior majoring in marriage and family studies, said she’s had great experiences with the education centers.

“They are extremely helpful and friendly,” Perron said. “I have changed my major a couple times and they have always helped.”

Perron said she had just finished changing her major and was grateful for the helpful service she received at the Human Development and Education Center.

Packard said registration for Spring Semester 2016 starts March 2, and the Human Development and Education Center encourages students to come into their office located on the third floor of the Gordon B. Hinckley Building or look online themselves and plan ahead for the semester so they are not stressed when they go to register for classes.
