How to be healthy on a budget


Most students know it is very important to live a healthy lifestyle, but some might not know how to live a healthy lifestyle while staying within their budget.

Donnya Rosier, a senior studying political science, said she has always had a dream to become a model. In the past two years, that dream has started to become a reality.

However, she said once she started modeling, she realized that she needed to become healthier.

“I had been trying to eat healthy to lose weight on and off, but last year I realized that eating healthy does not have to be boring or bland,” Rosier said.

There are many tips and materials available to help make healthy choices and stay within a budget such as making grocery lists and planning one’s meals, according to The United States Department of Agriculture.

Choosemyplate.org, a webiste about healthy and affordable eating says to pay attention to the price tags. There are two different prices, the price per unit and the retail price of the product.

If the product is exactly the same, then students can compare unit prices with retail prices to find which is the better buy.

For example, Product A is 32 ounces, price per ounce is $.05 and the retail price is $1.62, and Product B is 6 ounces, price per unit is $0.12 and the retail price is $0.72. Which is the better buy? Product A is better because even though the price is technically higher, there is more product per ounce.

Rosier said she has some of her own tips for students.

“Drink lots of water, especially if you have clean tap water,” Roster said. “Then you don’t have to spend money on bottled water. You can also make it taste better by adding lemons, limes or fruit to the water.”

Rosier also suggests buying in bulk.

“Go to stores like Winco or Sam’s club where bulk foods are cheap,” she said. There are other students on campus who share similar ideas as Rosier.

Kent Thomas John, a junior studying exercise physiology, believes students can eat healthy while living on a budget.

“I’ve been doing it for years,” John said.

He said it is good to buy things like frozen chicken, brown rice and quinoa in bulk. He also said it helps to buy frozen fruits and vegetables because they can be cheaper than buying fresh and are just as nutritious.

Why is there a misconception that eating healthy is more expensive?

“A lot of people look at the more expensive fruits and vegetables and expensive cuts of meat and think that ‘To eat healthy, this is what I need to eat,’” said Karri Hoopes, a certified nurse at Uintah Basin Medical Center. “They don’t realize that hamburger meat is actually pretty cheap, they just look at the expensive cuts like T-bone steaks. People also don’t want to take the time to prepare meals, or to educate themselves on what a balanced meal entails.”

Physical activity and nutrition work together for better health, according to the USDA.

“Take advantage of the multi-million dollar gym on campus where you can exercise alone or even sign up for fitness programs,” John said.

There are cheap or even free methods to stay active for those students who dislike the gym.

“You can workout at home as well,” Rosler said.  “Just be consistent and don’t stress yourself out.”

Students can also use their TV time to do a little workout, according to Good Houskeeping.

Engage in at-home exercises that are easy to master in your own living room, such as crunches, pushups, planks, mountain climbers or leg lifts, according to Good HouseKeeping.

Rosier said she attests to the benefits of living a healthy lifestyle.

“I noticed living healthier helps me focus better in school,” Rosier said. “My hair grows faster, and my skin stays clearer. Eating healthy and working out helps in every other aspect of your life.”
