The Outdoor Recreation Center is the location provided by BYU-Idaho where students can rent outdoor equipment.
Sam Perkins, a junior studying geology, and an employee at the ORC said the ORC has a lot of outdoor equipment.
“We have our general cycle between warm and cold season activities,” he said.
Perkins said during winter semester the ORC rents out winter equipment including skis and snowboards. Perkins said during the Spring and Summer months, the ORC has equipment for canoeing, rafting, kayaking and river tubes.
Perkins said the ORC has mountain bikes, road bikes and rock climbing equipment as well as general camping gear, tents and sleeping bags.
“I think most people on campus don’t know how much we actually rent here,” said Courtney Fernelius, a senior studying recreation management and an employer at the ORC.
Fernelius said people have a general idea that they can rent camping gear, but there are many other things available for rent at the ORC.
“In general, the ORC does have really good rental deals,” Perkins said.
Perkins said the staff asks that people take care of the rentals, and there is a “You Break It You Buy It” policy.
“The price is very reasonable, if not, much lower for rentals,” Fernelius said.
Perkins said students can come in Monday through Friday or visit the ORC Web page on byui.edu to see prices and what is available to rent.
Perkins said items available for rent are listed on the ORC Web page.
“Our hours can be found online as well,” he said.
Perkins said the school offers many opportunities to take advantage of the outdoors around Rexburg.
He said that rock-climbing gear is becoming more popular.
“The only thing that we don’t rent with rock climbing is safety gear,” he said.
Perkins said there are a lot of outdoor options around this area.
“We got the ORC as a resource,” he said. “Might as well get out and do stuff.”
