The Upper Valley Women’s Choir will be performing at the Rexburg Tabernacle Civic Center on May 14 at 7:30 p.m. to celebrate fallen soldiers.
They will sing for their event,”A Salute to America”, a rendition in honor of World War I ending and for those who fought for America.
Paula Sonderegger, choir director for the Upper Valley Women’s Choir, said she has been preparing “A Salute to America” for two and a half years after visiting the National World War I Museum and Memorial in Kansas City, Missouri.
“It made such an impression on me that I wanted our choir to do a special concert this year,” Sonderegger said.
She has been involved with the choir since 1999, first as a member of the choir and then, in 2002, as choir director.
“This year marks the 100-year anniversary of the ending of World War I, so we are doing a … number of songs from that era,” Sonderegger said.
She said the choir will also be performing other patriotic songs in an effort to bring the audience an uplifting and rewarding experience.
The choir currently has 38 women participating who have been rehearsing for this event since the beginning of January.
The event is free, but donations are welcome. All donations will be given to the local chapter of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
According to the Upper Valley Women’s Choir’s blog, the choir was established in 1978 under the name The Rexburg Women’s Choir.
They held rehearsals in various churches at the beginning of the choir’s creation. Eventually, they began to rehearse at the Rexburg Tabernacle and changed their name to The Cantabile Singers.
In 2010, their name was officially changed to the Upper Valley Women’s Choir and has remained that way.
“The choir has always been service oriented,” according to their blog. Annually, the choir serves by singing at the local nursing homes and assisted living centers, among other projects.
“We are always looking for new members,” Sonderegger said. “We rehearse every Thursday morning from 9 to 11 a.m. at the Rexburg Tabernacle.”
The Upper Valley Women’s Choir gives a special invitation to all veterans as they dedicate a special number to them in their performance on May 14.
