Students at BYU-Idaho share their favorite experiences involving General Conference, past and present.
“My favorite experience was the talk given by [President Dieter F.] Uchtdorf about the two word sermon, ‘stop it’ and how the merciful obtain mercy. It reminds me how the gospel is really simple when you look at it like that,” said Cambrea Fisher, a freshman studying pre-nursing.
Certain talks can be memorable because of the feelings the listener felt.
“I think one of my favorites would be President Gordon B. Hinckley’s talk from 2007 about being clean,” Stephen Hulbert, senior studying geology. “It felt like an old testament prophet was speaking to me.”
For Eric Johnson, a senior studying psychology, the talk he remembers the most was given in Oct. 2006.
“Probably one of my favorite talks was Elder Worthlin’s talk “Sunday Will Come”; it was right after his wife died. He talked about how his wife was an influence in his life. Because of Christ’s sacrifice, the pain from the passing of loved ones goes away,” Johnson said.
Conference holds a special place in the hearts of many students. Ashlin Gurr, a freshman studying exercise physiology, is one such student.
Gurr said what she most enjoys about conference is, “just being with family and being able to be taught by our leaders. Just the whole togetherness aspect and the feeling of unity.”
Some students try to spiritually prepare themselves before each General Conference.
“It’s hard to pick one specific experience. You just have to prepare for the message you’re seeking out,” said Caitlin Duffy, a freshman studying graphic design.
The process of preparing for conference can oftentimes remind people of talks that they enjoyed from the previous General Conference.
“I love the talk by President Monson about daring to stand alone from our last conference,” said Kaitlyn Smith, a freshman studying business management.
