Thirteen dead in Navy Yard shooting
Thirteen people, including gunman Aaron Alexis of Fort Worth, Texas, were confirmed dead as result of a shooting at the Washington Navy Yard September 16, 2013.
According to the LA times Alexis, 34, was killed in a gun battle with police and authorities are seeking two others.
The shooting started around 8:20 a.m at the Naval Seas System Command Headquarters building, according to various news sources.
“I’m deeply shocked and saddened by the shooting this morning at the Navy Yard.” said Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus in a Navy press release. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families.”
Authorities have not yet found a motive for the shooting with no evidence linking it to terrorist activities according to the LA Times.
According to NBC news this is the worst mass shooting on a military installation since the shooting at Fort Hood, Texas in 2009 when 13 people were killed.
President Obama said in a speech after the shootings that the victims were “patriots” and expressed gratitude for those involved in investigating the shooting.
