Finals can be a celebration of learning according to some professors, but for a majority of students at BYU-Idaho finals provide a moment to make or break a grade. Here are three tips that can help alleviate the stress of finals and facilitate a successful environment.

1. Sleep!

Preparing for the final task in a course can be exhausting since it requires multiple days of preparation and late nights of completing assignments. A majority of students find sleep to be the last thing on their minds when it comes to finals week.

“I usually have so much work to do that I forget about myself in the preparations of finals,” said Steven Pedersen, a junior studying mathematics education composite. “I feel that sleep suffers the most because of how easy it is to stay up late and forget about sleep.”

J. David Forbes a Nashville, Tennessee, physician specializing in stress management, told Everyday Health that having enough energy is necessary to overcome stress. Sleep is one of the things we can do to obtain this energy.

“Winging it on not much sleep has a profound effect on how we experience the stressors of the day,” Forbes said.

Adults should get a minimum of seven hours.

2. Check yourself before you wreck yourself

Procrastination is not a foreign topic among college students. According to the American Psychological Association, between 80 and 95 percent of college students procrastinate on their schoolwork. This is especially evident since finals week is the last week for all assignments to be turned in.

“It can be overwhelming to confront a large assignment thinking you need to finish the whole thing in one sitting,” according to USA Today College. “Conversely, chipping away at it a little at a time is much more manageable.”

Procrastination can be inevitable for many; however, in organizing assignments into smaller tasks, it will allow for better time coordination in the end.

3. Friends — how many of us have them?

Friends and supporters can provide the relief needed when a person is beyond their breaking point. Friends helped Ian Johnson, a senior studying accounting, overcome the worry of failure and succeed on his finals.

“Stress can overcome anybody at anytime,” Johnson said. “I was overcome by stress but friends helped pick me up from defeat and rise to confidence in the future.”

The ideal people who alleviate stress are friends who don’t judge or try to give a lot of advice when talking about the tension in a day.
