One of the biggest decisions a college student makes is what to major in. This one decision creates a path for the rest of their future.
This decision can produce stress; BYU-Idaho has provided resources to guide students in the right direction.
Self-discovery assessments
BYUI provides assessments to help students find out more about themselves. These assessments include TypeFocus, Values in Action and World of Work Inventory. Links to these assessments and information on how they help can be found on BYUI’s self-discovery page.
Academic Advising
Students can schedule an appointment with Academic Advising on campus to discuss possible majors and career plans. According to the Academic Advising’s webpage, “Our vision is to help every student prepare to reach his or her potential.”
Appointments are available for in-person, Zoom, and phone meetings. More information on Academic Advising can be found on it’s website.
Freshman Focus
BYUI provides a two-semester program that allows new students to sample different majors and careers that fit their interests. Freshman Focus students choose from seven different focus areas to explore.
Within each focus area, students can connect with people who have similar interests and begin planning their future. More information on Freshman Focus can be found on BYUI’s website.
Explore Careers
Some students choose their major from an interest or passion, while others already have a career in mind. Students having a hard time choosing a major can explore careers instead and then find a major that will support it.
BYUI offers resources to help students choose a career, including CareerOneStop and My Next Move. Both of these websites offer information on a variety of careers and assessments to find one that fits each individual.
More information on BYUI’s career resources can be found on their career discovery page.
Bonus resource: God is always available to help his children. Matthew 7:7 says, “Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you.” Turning to scriptures or prayer can provide heavenly guidance with big decisions.
