Yesterday RecSports began their 3 on 3 basketball tournament. The tournament is held each semester for both men and women. Kjersti Schiffler and Jessica Faulkner, event managers for the tournament, explain why the tournament is being held.
“We know there are lots of people on campus who love basketball,” Shiffler said. “We want smaller teams to have the opportunity to play and get their toes in the water before the tournament starts or before our leagues start, which start on January 24.”
“This semester March Madness is coming ,” said Faulkner. “It’s one that we always do because its one of our bigger ones and we know that Basketball is one of our biggest sports and at RecFest which is our promoting thing that we just had, everyone wanted to play basketball there. All of our courts were being used for that pretty much.”
The tournament began yesterday with a round robin that determined the seeding for each team. Tonight at 7 p.m., teams will compete in a double elimination tournament where the winning team will be crowned the 3 on 3 tournament champion. The event coordinators explained that RecSports is always looking for volunteers for their events.
“They can come into the office here and talk to someone,” Faulkner said. “If not they can just show and say ‘Hey, I want to volunteer.’”
“Just come join,” said Shiffler. “You don’t need any experience. If you know how basketball works that’s great but just come join and it should be fun.”
The tournament will finish tonight in the BYU-I Center so go and sport your classmates. Reporting from the student activities office, this is Steven Butler, Scroll Digital.
