Brigham Young University-Idaho is holding its annual battleship event in the John W. Hart building swimming pool this Saturday, Feb. 21.
The event, a live take on the boardgame Battleship, consists of students in a canoe with their team of four people, trying to sink or capsize all other teams' canoes.
There are typically 10 teams in the pool at a time, and two or more heats to accommodate more teams. Each person gets one object to use against the other canoes.
Ryan Hansen, the event coordinator, says there are generally two types of objects people like to use. Participants use buckets to sink other canoes or use shields to prevent getting sunk themselves.

Hansen first started the battleship event at BYUI during the spirit week of Spring 2004. He brought the game to other places that he went, and many people loved the idea.
“It just caught fire and [now] people are doing it across the nation, big schools, small schools … all the way to Florida," said Hansen.
He goes on to explain that battleship is for everyone. It doesn't require practice or any level of training.
“[The good thing is that] it doesn’t take great athleticism. It’s a kind of social experience and a lot of fun while still having a great element of competition," Hansen said.

Hansen encourages students wanting to participate to pick teams and sign up soon. The information to sign up is on BYUI's events page.
