A new app developed by BYU student Jake Gardanier is making it easier for students to meet, network and connect at social events. Gardanier and his co-founder, Connor Hilton, are both sophomores studying information systems.

“People would leave parties or events and say, ‘I wish I had talked to that person,’” Gardanier said. “That’s why I created the app, so there are no more missed opportunities.”

The app shows nearby users and allows students to send friend requests, view linked social profiles and message each other. It also lets users post events, upload fliers and browse upcoming parties or networking opportunities in their area.

According to the App Store, “Proximity lets you instantly discover and connect with people within 100 yards of you. Whether you’re on campus, at an event, or exploring your city, Proximity makes meeting new people in real life simple and exciting.”

Since its release in late August, the app has grown to about 350 users in the Provo area.

“I've had several people tell me that when they're at the library on campus, they look for people to study with using the app,” said Gardanier.

The founders have partnered with local athletes and social media influencers in Provo, offering gift cards and compensation for referrals in an attempt to advertise the new app.

They hope to bring the app to BYU-Idaho and the Rexburg area.

“We are looking to find ambassadors and events to sponsor, similar to the growth strategy we have done in Provo,” said Gardanier.

Although Proximity Live is available to download from the App Store, users in Rexburg cannot use it because there aren't enough users in the surrounding area.

Baker Heggie, a BYU-Idaho student studying business management, expressed his excitement for the app to reach the Rexburg area.

“This would be an excellent app,” said Heggie.
