On Oct. 14, BYU-Idaho Alumna Katia Brown published her first book: “A Citizen's Guide to Presidential Elections.”

The book is written for all audiences preparing for the upcoming election. It outlines the presidential election process, explaining topics such as the electoral college, the party system, the campaign trail, how to vote and more.

This information can be helpful since the 2024 Presidential Election is just over a week away. The book can be purchased on Amazon.

Brown started writing the book last year in her editing essentials class at BYUI. She was inspired to write on this topic because of her passion for political science, which she also studied during her time as a student.

Brown was surprised by her associates' lack of enthusiasm to vote, and she saw a need to inform those around her on the topic. She hopes that those who read her book will see the importance of their specific vote.

“I think there's a lot of power in knowing how your system works," said Brown. "It gives you more faith in the system and helps you understand how exactly your vote impacts the election.”

Brown encourages students to inform themselves before voting.

“Really research the candidates,” Brown said. “You may think you know a lot about them just from seeing the headlines, but try to understand their policies ... You may not love either option, but you can't complain about either option unless you voted.”

Brown graduated from BYUI last April with a degree in communication. She currently works as a part-time marketing agent, takes care of her two-month-old baby girl and writes in her spare time. Her blog features more of her political writing pieces.

She only recently graduated, but she has already seen the impact that BYUI had on her life.

“Studying there taught me how I want to live,” Brown said. “And that's to always learn and always write and always try to be a leader in everything I do.”
