The BYU Medical School was announced at the beginning of September 2024. Since then, there have been rumors that related majors that feed into medical school will be shortened.
Due to the high demand in the medical field, BYU-Idaho wants students to finish their undergrads quickly and start working on their master's.
Starting in Fall 2026, BYUI is changing the Bio-Medical Major to a one-year bachelor's degree program.
This program will include a “condensed” curriculum with triple-length lectures, overnight anatomy labs, and online “speed learning.”
“This is a pioneering moment in education, much like the pioneers, our students will enter the field prepared,” said Elder Martin J. “After all, pioneers didn’t need four years of training to perform an amputation!”
The program will also implement artificial intelligence so students can learn “the most essential” information quickly and easily.
Hospitals in Utah will be implementing a new test titled “BYU Med Competency Exam” which once passed, students may begin their residency in those hospitals.
“Modern students can handle more information in less time,” said Dean of Future Medicine Dr. Gregory. “We are confident this one-year degree will prepare them for the future of medicine.”
Since students will be busy focusing on only school and not working during this year they are implementing a “One-Year, One-Tithe Tuition Plan.”
This tuition plan will allow students to pay a part of tuition with a promise of 10% of future earnings to fund medical miracles.

“We prayed about it, and the answer was clear: Less time in class, the more time in scrubs. Plus, our AI ‘Brother Bot’ will be taking over the major coursework so our students are in great hands,” said Alan Mecham.
Sarah Prolo, a future biomedical science major, gave her thoughts.
“When they first told me my four-year degree was now a one-year degree, I was a little concerned…But honestly, I am excited to graduate before my student loans kick in,” said Prolo.
