BYU-Idaho’s intramural powder puff teams took the field Saturday, and over 50 students played in a pep band that came together just for the occasion.
Dave Faires of the music department organized the pep band for the powder puff game. He initiated a similar band this summer for the Fourth of July. Helping him this fall is one of the music education students, Jackson Bone.

Bone helped organize, conduct and then play in the band on Saturday. Despite only an hour and a half rehearsal the morning of the game, Bone had high hopes for the music. All he asked was that students bring their instruments and a good attitude.
"We expect people to just show up, do their best and have a good time," said Bone.

Students came from all over the university, not just the music department, many of them rediscovering instruments they had not played since high school.
Andrew Beutler learned the tuba in sixth grade and pulled it out on Saturday. He plays double bass in the jazz band, but has not played tuba since high school.
"I'm kind of a bass clef guy," said Beutler.

By the time he began playing in the bleachers Saturday morning, Beutler had already been awake for 6 hours, but he was fresh and ready to go.
"It's a beautiful day! God is smiling down on Rexburg," Beutler said.
On the icy bleachers starting at 9:30 a.m., the band serenaded the powder puff teams and the hype squad through their warm-ups.

Luke Archibald has been playing trumpet for 8 years and was excited to play "Take On Me" with the band. Other songs the band featured were "Hey Song," "Land of a Thousand Dances," "Seven Nation Army," "Uptown Funk" and "Thriller."

Throughout the game, the pep band cheered for both Team Blue and Team White.
"All I know is I want BYUI to win!" Faires joked.
