On Thursday, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints announced that Elder Gérald Caussé will be the newest member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles.

The Quorum of the Twelve consists of the highest authority of church leadership. Elder Caussé fills the vacany left in the Quorum following the passing of President Russell M. Nelson on Sept. 27.

"Apostles are special witnesses of the name of Christ throughout the world," Church newsroom reported. "They also engage in significant administrative responsibilities, overseeing the operation and development of a global church."

Elder Caussé has spent the last 11 years as Presiding Bishop. He also served as a General Authority Seventy from 2008-2012 and a counselor in the Presiding Bishopric from 2012-2015.
