During the Saturday morning session of the 196th General Conference, members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints had the opportunity to sustain Dallin H. Oaks as Prophet and President of the Church.

The previous president, Russell M. Nelson, passed away September 27, 2025. On October 14, 2025, the Church introduced Dallin H. Oaks as the new prophet.

Saturday's first session of the conference kicked off with a solemn assembly, a sustaining vote to introduce a new president of the Church. In his introductory remarks, President Oaks explained how the solemn assembly works.

"In a solemn assembly, we will sustain members of the First Presidency and the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles and other senior leaders voting by quorums or groups," President Oaks said. "We do this only in the first conference where a new president and prophet of the Church has been called."

The last solemn assembly occurred in April 2018. At the time, President Henry B. Eyring of the First Presidency explained that a solemn assembly has been standard since 1880, when John Taylor succeeded Brigham Young as president of the Church.

"Each of these occasions has been designated as a formal, solemn assembly of the body of the Church to express the voice of the Church," President Eyring said during the 2018 solemn assembly.

President D. Todd Christofferson, second counselor of the First Presidency, conducted the solemn assembly. It began with members of the First Presidency making the sustaining vote, followed by the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles.

President Christofferson then invited members of the elders quorum, the Relief Society, the Young Men and Young Women to sustain the First Presidency and Quorum of the Twelve Apostles. The final vote was for all members of the Church, even those who had previously sustained.

Included among the sustaining votes was Elder Clark G. Gilbert. Elder Gilbert was president of BYU-Idaho from 2015 to 2017 and Commissioner of the Church Education System until February. His calling to the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles replaces President Jeffrey R. Holland, who passed away on December 27, 2025.
