Rexburg is planning a new police facility to keep up with the city’s growth, improve public safety and replace aging infrastructure.

Built in the 1990s, Rexburg’s current police station struggles to meet the needs of a growing population and increasingly complex public safety demands.

City officials cite population growth — now exceeding 40,000 residents — as a key factor driving the need for expanded facilities and updated infrastructure.

While Rexburg remains one of the safest cities in Idaho, the demand for police services has increased significantly in recent years.

“This isn’t about luxury,” said Rexburg Police Chief Josh Rhodes during a recent town hall meeting. “It’s about functionality. Our officers need the space and tools to do their job well, and the community deserves a department that can keep up with demand.”

If approved, the new building is estimated to cost $12.4 million and would be located near the current city center. Plans include expanded training rooms, secure evidence storage, upgraded holding cells and improved technology.

Town hall meetings were held in June to gather public feedback. Some residents raised concerns about the price tag, but others expressed strong support, saying the city needs to invest in long-term safety.

A citywide vote on funding the project is expected to take place this fall. Until then, the city encourages residents to learn more and share their input.

Project plans and updates can be found on the city’s official website.
