Hip-hop, ballet and break dancing all have something in common besides being forms of dance. Each of these styles made an appearance at the Battle of the Dance auditions held in the MC on Oct. 17.
Dana Hansen, a senior studying art, is the IVmatics dance crew’s leader.
“We have been a part of Battle of the Dance before this one, and have been blessed with being in the top two gros every semester,” Hansen said.
Hansen said his crew is also hoping to perform in Best of Show, which will take place at the end of the semester.
He said the top two crews are chosen every semester and they are hoping to be a part of that again this semester.
“I have been dancing since I was six,” Hansen said. “I was about 12 when I started doing hip hop, and I fell in love with the style.”
Hansen said his teacher, who was originally from Ukraine, inspired him in his dancing.
The Bangarangs, a break dancing crew, said they are hoping to win Best of Show.
Terry Song, a junior studying applied mathematics, is the Bangarang dance crew’s leader.
“The Bangarang crew has existed since 2012,” Song said. “I, however, have been break dancing since the seventh grade.”
The Bangarang crew has a total of 13 members. Song said he wants to give the best performance possible.
“I want to make history and create a legend,” Song said. “The theme of this performance is coming together as one with peace and unity.”
Song said the best thing about performing is all the excitement.
“The lights, the adrenaline rush, and the crowd cheering,” Song said.
The Battle of the Dance performance will take place in the Oscar A. Kirkham Auditorium Oct. 26 at 8 p.m. Tickets will be $3 for students.
