Elevate Competition: ‘One heart, one mind, one faith’

On Nov. 10 in the Hyrum Manwaring Center Crossroads, five teams competed in an interdisciplinary studies competition. The general education for interdisciplinary studies program has about 500 students at BYU–Idaho. These students came together to develop a solution for social change. Each team devised a plan to answer one social change question.

The competition originally began with 40 teams and came down to the last five in the finals. The five teams were Compiling Emotional Resources, Act Now, United We Stand, Cultural Representation of the Savior, and The Student Hive. Each team had the opportunity to present for 10 minutes, and following the presentations, there was a judge’s panel discussion for five minutes.

The judges included Danae Romrell, Boyd Baggett, Tara Steenson, Dayne Kinghorn, Aaron Sanns, Jill Evans and the director of Elevate, Caryn Esplin.

After all the teams presented, the judges decided which app or plan they would like to implement, based on an evaluation rubric and their personal thought processes.

In third place, Act Now wanted to implement an app called Act Now, to help bring more service to the campus and allow people to meet each other. The question they posed was, “How might we connect and serve with those nearest?”

The basis of the app is similar to BeReal. Every day a prompt would be sent to allow people to meet in their areas and create deeper relationships while doing acts of service. With a little longer time to reply than BeReal allows, individuals can make an actual connection without force.

“The app emphasizes each of our strengths,” said Kent Kelly, a member of Act Now. “We came up with the idea as I was talking with my roommate and he typically works on structuring apps.”

In second place, Cultural Representations of the Savior wanted to help those from diverse backgrounds feel more connected at BYU-Idaho. Their social change question was, “How might we increase student exposure to International culture, so that exclusion is not a result of cultural differences?”

They wanted to implement their idea by adding pictures of the Savior around campus. These pictures could be drawn by people of different cultures or depict children and people of different ethnicities with Christ.

In first place, Compiling Emotional Resources wanted to put all of the work in the counseling center to use. The question they wanted to answer was, “How might we help the Counseling Center be proactive in helping students on the waitlist so that they feel valued as they wait?”

They proposed creating a module on Canvas for the Counseling Center. This module would allow all the emotional resources and links to be found in one place and be easily accessible in moments of strife.

“All five of these apps need to be implemented,” Esplin said. “All of them. I loved every idea.”
