The Craters of the Moon visitors center, bookstore and washrooms open Friday, Jan. 27. Winter grooming — plowing and such — of Loop Road and ranger-guided snowshoe hikes begin the same day.

Craters of the Moon is a national preserve located about 95 miles west of Rexburg. It boasts 410,000 acres of land with lava fields and caves and is often used for hiking and camping.

The visitors’ center and bookstore will be open from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Thursdays through Mondays. It will be closed Tuesdays and Wednesdays.

Those interested in winter camping can camp at the park but must obtain backcountry camping permits. Permits are available at the visitors’ center.

The park offers free cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, biking and hiking on Loop Road. Snowshoes can be rented from the Craters of the Moon National History Association. See the Blaine County Recreation District website for winter trail conditions.
