Anytime someone mentions a Monday night the first thing that comes to mind is probably family home evening. But what if instead of FHE it was sports yoga? Instructor James Anderson tells us what he hopes to accomplish.
James Anderson said, “you know the thing i like to do the most is to change the misconceptions about yoga, um because there’s kind of this idea that in yoga you’re gonna go to some class and sit and meditate and stretch for twenty minutes and then lie on the floor for another fifteen, but really behind yoga there is a lot of power and strength and coordination exercises and you can work a pretty good sweat and get a great exercise from it, and it has a lot to offer an athlete.”
Sports yoga can improve many aspects of your health. James has been an instructor for several years now and he has several regulars who attend his class. One of those regulars is Adri Cardani. She says that the main reason she attends so regularly is to improve her endurance.
Adri Cardani told me, “it really increases your endurance I’d say. You wouldn’t think with yoga people just think ‘oh flexability’ which definitely helps but it definitely helps my endurance and like keeping and being able to breathe.”
Sports yoga isn’t a stand alone exercise. It’ll test all athletes in one way or another. Brennan bean started yoga this semester and said just how much the class relieved the stresses of his studies and life. It also went hand in hand with his other forms of exercise.
Brennan bean says, “I find that doing this in addition to biking running and weight lifting it creates a lot of balance in my life. Doing anyone of those things all the time wouldn’t be as helpful as doing them all together. Yoga kind of allows me to release the stress you get weight lifting but weight lifting makes yoga easier to do and also makes it more fulfilling.”
So if you’re looking to branch out from the normal weight lifting or the standard lap around the track then try out sports yoga on Monday nights and see where you can improve. No matter how hard you work out in yoga, you’ll get to take a nap at the end anyway. I’m Adam Doan, reporting from the hart gym, Scroll TV News.
