Everyone struggles with dating; it’s inevitable. Sometimes we feel we are off worse than others, and compare ourselves with things like, “He’s so good at flirting with girls, and I am so awkward," or “She is so confident around guys, and I feel like I freeze up and make a fool of myself when I am around the male specimen.”
If you feel that you struggle getting to know others and what to say or do on dates, look no further! This article includes dating advice just for you!
Before we dive into it, remember that your worth is not determined by the fact that you are either single or dating. You are a child of God.
But sometimes, the desire for love in your life can make you feel lonely. You can include love in your life by showing love towards family and friends.
Acts of love are how we feel a sense of purpose, and instead of waiting for someone to come into your life, become the person you'd want to attract by showing love and service to those around you!
Without further ado, here are six hot tips to remember as you date around and find someone who fits your needs:
How Do I Ask People Out?
Asking people out can be nerve-racking; it's scary to be vulnerable and risk getting rejected. But, if you want to start going on dates, you have to put yourself out there. That's the only way. This includes women, too—think a guy is cute? Ask him for his number!
"Sometimes, a dude likes being asked out too," said Ryan Spurgeon, a sophomore studying communication.
Ask them their name and don't dance around your intentions. Brooklyn Anson, a freshman studying communication, said that when a guy asks her out, she wants him to be straightforward and get to the point — no elaborate plans. Tell them what you think — "I think you're cute and would like to get to know you better!"
If you are the one who asks someone on a date, you need to be the one in charge of the date. Get ideas, ask the person what they like to do, but you are the initiator. Spurgeon urges those who ask people out to have a plan for a date before even asking.
Dates Don't Have to Be the Most Special Thing Ever.
A few common places to go are restaurants (such as Righteous Slice or Red Rabbit Grill) or sweet-treat places (such as Kiwi Loco or Sugar Beast).
BYUI holds dance nights (such as Latin dancing and country dancing), so if you like to dance, you could ease your date into some steps that you enjoy doing.
Double-dates are also great options for activities that require more people, such as bowling.
As long as you have something planned to do together, you can have fun with it.

However, there are some things that you shouldn't do on a first date (or second, or third).
You don't want to give off the wrong first impression.
Driving around in your car talking is not enough of a plan, and inviting them to your apartment is not ideal, as intentions might be misinterpreted in both situations.
Movie theatre dates and going to a hot tub or swimming are also not the best ideas since during a movie, it's hard to talk to each other, and in the pool people feel insecure about how they look, and it is physically demanding.
What to Talk About on Dates.
So, you've secured the date and figured out what to do.
But now what? What is there to talk about?
Everyone knows the basic questions, but those don't help you really get a solid picture of someone. Ask them about their favorite vacation, or dream destination, their favorite childhood memory, or what inspires them in life, things like that.
Be creative, but not overbearing. Good questions are the ones that don't get too personal and that someone could have fun answering. People like talking about themselves, so show your date you are interested in who they are and what they have to say!
When asked what makes people the most attractive to them, Spurgeon said that when he asks questions and the other person doesn't give any effort to answer him, he feels like an interrogator rather than on a date, like he's doing all the work. Don't leave your date feeling that way.
Anson and Catalina Case, a freshman in Communications, said that guys being nonchalant is "the worst possible thing for a guy to do on a first date."
Now, asking questions is good for sparking conversations, but both parties have to be ready to talk, even though it can be awkward.
You both should put in effort. AND REMEMBER! You are just getting to know them to see if you'd click.
Asking someone a question regarding how many kids they want, or about their dream wedding destination, is off-limits. Just have fun and get to know them!
Be Yourself!
Sometimes, it is hard to feel that you can be yourself on a first date, since you want to impress them and avoid your quirky side as much as possible.
The thing is, if you avoid it completely, the person won't get a glimpse of who you truly are and what you are into. Lean a little bit into yourself.
Show them what you are passionate about and what makes you happy.
Is This Person for You or Not?
Many things that people look for are whether morals and qualities match up. People look for others who can push them to become better, but not at the expense of boundaries or values. Don't go into a relationship seeking to change someone, or that someone should change you.
It's common in the dating world for it not to work out, or people may lead you on, but there is always hope.
Case specified that "in this generation, the worst thing is the little game of jumping back and forth" about liking someone but not doing anything about it—to keep "making excuses to see each other, but not date." It isn't kind to either party. There needs to be honesty.
If this happens, and you don't want to continue anything romantically, make sure to let the person know that they are an awesome person, but that you are looking for something else. Ghosting people is not a good solution. It is unfair to leave people hanging. Everyone deserves closure!
Alone Time in a Relationship?
It's good and healthy for the relationship for both of you to have alone time. Remembering to stay true to yourself is important so you can bring those qualities into the relationship and grow together.
"You have to know who you are first as yourself," said Case.
Make sure to keep up with your individuality! Sometimes, you might even have to ask for alone time, which isn't a bad thing. Be honest, open, and communicative with the person you are dating, and you will avoid many problems.
