Political organization Take a Stand & Let Your Voice Be Heard is hosting a rally supporting child survivors of sexual assault on May 2 at 9 a.m.

The event, titled "Protect Our Children: Stand for Survivors Rally," will take place at the Idaho Falls Japanese Friendship Garden.

Tim Sopalski, founder of Take a Stand & Let Your Voice Be Heard and organizer of the event, said the rally aims to give a voice to survivors.

“At its core, this rally is about giving a voice to those who have been silenced and standing together as a community to say that their experiences matter," Sopalski said.

According to the organization's Facebook page, Sopalski and his team push for "harsher punishments for sexual offenses, restructuring of plea bargains and better education surrounding them and [making] Idaho a strong presumption against granting a convicted sex offender custody of a child."

Sopalski's purpose for creating Take a Stand & Let Your Voice Be Heard came to light while supporting a friend.

“When I was younger, my family experienced sexual abuse in a very direct way. My scoutmaster ... ended up abusing my brother and exposing other boys in our troop to sexual content," Spoalski explained.

Later in life, Sopalski's friend found herself "navigating a similar situation … As we talked, I asked why people often fail to recognize the seriousness and danger of these situations."

"Her response stuck with me: ‘people don’t want to take a stand.’"

Sopalski said that a conversation led to the idea of creating a space where survivors can share their individual experiences.

"A group of us came together and decided that silence wasn't acceptable anymore," Sopalski said.
