After serving over a quarter century as an apostle and president of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles for 2 and a half
Holland died at age 85, at approximately 3:15 a.m. MT, according to an announcement from Church Newsroom.
Born Dec. 3, 1940, Holland served as a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles for 31 years after being sustained in 1994. Earlier this year, he was set apart as president of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, a position he held for approximately two and a half months until his death.
“I pledge everything I have and everything I know how to give to witnessing the divinity of the Savior’s life and the restoration of his gospel. My greatest joy and my solemn obligation is to testify of Jesus Christ wherever I may go and with whomever I may be for as long as I shall live,” said Holland in an article written by Don L. Searle for Liahona in 1995.
At the time of his passing, Holland was the second most senior apostle in the Church.
Church leaders expressed condolences to Holland’s family and acknowledged his lifelong service to the Church.
“I have loved President Holland since those early days… He had a ‘fabulous’ talent for teaching the gospel, along with ‘enormous spiritual depth," said Elder Quentin L. Cook, who served with Holland on their mission to England in the early 1960s, in a statement to the Church Newsroom.
Additional details regarding funeral arrangements have not been released.
According to the Deseret News, President Holland’s passing creates two vacancies in the Church’s leadership. Church President Dallin H. Oaks will call President Henry B. Eyring, first counselor in the First Presidency, to serve as president of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, with President Dieter F. Uchtdorf assuming the role of the quorum’s acting president. President Oaks will also call a new apostle to fill the quorum’s 12th seat.
