On April 26, Rexburg’s drive-in movie theater, Teton Vu Drive-In, will reopen to the public.
Teton Vu Drive-In and Paramount Five are currently operated by Cameron Andrews and his siblings.
Andrews said he and his family are converting the film projectors to digital projectors at Paramount Five.
Teton Vu Drive-In does not contain any digital projectors yet, but will in the future.
He also said that this could be a problem, as digital projectors are rapidly replacing film as the industry continues to change.
According to www.deadline.com, a Hollywood news site, the National Association of Theater Owners said that nearly 64 percent of theaters were using digital projectors as of 2012.
Andrews said that theaters using film projectors would not be able to find film by the end of this year.
“Convert or die. For drive-in’s, statistically, it’s die,” Andrews said.
He said that the change was happening more rapidly than anticipated.
Andrews said that he and his siblings had originally believed that the transition to digital would take between five to ten years, but in 2012, he found out from the movie industry that he had only 12 months to convert.
Instead of film, digital projectors project images from a 500- to 600-gigabyte hard drive.
Andrews said that originally he had borrowed money to put in one digital projector with the intention of only purchasing one.
He said he wanted to do this each year, until all the film projectors had been replaced.
“But now it’s you do it [convert to digital projectors] all now, or you die,” Andrews said.
He said that a digital projector is more expensive, costing almost $90,000, compared to $5,000 or $6,000 for a film projector. Andrews said that he was forced to raise prices in order to keep with the changes.
Andrews said Teton Vu Drive-In has served the residents of Rexburg and surrounding communities since 2008.
Teton Vu Drive-In is located on 1114 N Yellowstone Hwy. Gates open between 7 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.
Gates close when the last movie being shown for the night has finished.
