Mr. BYUI, a male pageant, returns for its second run in the Hyrum Manwaring Center on Friday and centers around student stereotypes.
Lavinia Fifita, a sophomore studying psychology, is an events coordinator for Campus Life and said this semester's show is attempting to stray away from the traditional pageant style performances and is working to show the contestants' authentic selves.
"This year we wanted to reconstruct it a little bit, and kind of pull away from like the 'pageant,' and lean more into the fun and realistic," Fifita said. "The whole theme of it this time is stereotypes, so it's like all the stereotypes that you can think of about BYU-Idaho guys. So we have the gym bro, the ring-by-spring guy, the fast engaged guy, the superly involved guy, the super awkward, weird guy who's always hanging out in the library, and is always like at the same spot."
The performers were required to audition, but Fifita said they were all so entertaining in the preliminary performances that Campus Life expanded the number of contestant spots.
"It was like really tough to narrow it down," Fifita said. "We were only trying to take like six or seven, but I mean, everyone was like really good. We had to increase our numbers to nine, and so these nine guys all auditioned, and we accepted them all."
Jared Austin, a senior studying communications, is an events coordinator alongside Fifita. He said that people should come to the event to connect and enjoy the performances these young men have put together.
"All of these participants, all of these young men who are participating, are extremely talented," Austin said. "They're extremely funny, and they love BYU Idaho. They're doing this as a way of putting themselves out there, and they're also doing this as a way of providing a fun and uplifting environment for BYU-Idaho."
Tickets for Friday's event can be purchased online or at the door.
