On Oct. 29, two teams stormed the BYU-Idaho Quidditch Pitch for a tournament of close calls, teamwork and high-flying enjoyment. Yes, enjoyment, even through the Saturday morning 30-degree weather.

Quidditch is played with seven players on each team. The three chasers can be identified by their white sweatbands. It is their job to move the quaffle down the field and attempt to score, by throwing the ball into one of the three hoops of the opposing team. There are two beaters who use the bludgers to tag the opposing team’s chasers and stop them from scoring. The beaters are known by their black sweatbands.

The keeper, remembered by the green sweatband, acts as a goalie for the hoops. Each team has one keeper.

The seeker wears a yellow sweatband and is sometimes said to be the most important player. Without the seeker, the match would never end. Their job is to retrieve the golden snitch. A non-player runs around the pitch with the snitch while the seekers attempt to catch it before the other team. Once the snitch is in the hand of a seeker, that team receives 30 extra points, and the game is over.

Muggle quidditch is a high-cardio game. It requires communication between team members and dedication to one’s role. Each team member is vital.

The teams on Saturday played with dedication and humility. Not having practiced before, the Gryffindor team threw on their jerseys, played hard and won the tournament.

“It seemed very unique that we had a literal quidditch team at BYU-Idaho,” said Ashlyn Walker, a freshman studying elementary education. “So we had to come and see.”
