After taking a poll around campus, the results showed that when asked what the first thing that comes to mind when someone hears “human resources,” around 75% of students on campus think of Toby from NBC’s The Office.
Emily Bidstrup is a sophomore studying business management with an emphasis in human resources. Currently, Bidstrup is the human resources administrator for Cedar Point Trucking.
“People who think of human resources (representatives) as Toby have had bad human resources people,” Bisdtrup said. “Good HR people respect their employees by caring for them.”
Bidstrup said her boss is the perfect example of someone with a typical human resources position.
“My boss can make situations not super serious but still get the point across,” Bidstrup said. “Like you made a mistake but we are not mad at you, we just need you to do better.”
Bitstrup’s other responsibilities in human resources include hiring truck drivers, sorting out misunderstandings in the office, filing legal paperwork and working the front desk. Bidstrup loves what she does.
“I really like doing the paperwork side of things,” Bidstrup said. “It is nice to have a specific set of guidelines before (drivers) get hired. I feel confident about bringing in drivers because they have met all the checkmarks.”
Bidstrup hasn’t always felt confident in her ability to do her job.
“I wish I had more education before starting because there’s lots of stuff like laws that we have to be pretty strict with,” Bidstrup said. “Of course, my boss has a master’s in HR so he’s been teaching me a lot.”
