Worship services turned tragic Sunday morning when a man drove into a meetinghouse of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, opened fire on congregants and set the building on fire, according to reports from CNN, The New York Times and Newsweek.
Police said the suspect, a 40-year-old man from Burton, Michigan, crashed into the Grand Blanc Township meetinghouse around 10:25 a.m. before beginning to shoot. He was later killed following a confrontation with law enforcement, The New York Times reported.
At least one person was killed and nine others were injured, some critically, according to CNN. Fire crews extinguished the blaze, though authorities said areas of the building remain unsafe and could reveal additional victims once fully searched.
President Donald Trump responded on Truth Social, writing that the incident “appears to be yet another targeted attack on Christians in the United States of America,” urging prayers for victims and their families, Newsweek reported. Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer called the violence “unacceptable” and offered condolences to the Grand Blanc community, according to The New York Times.
The FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives are assisting in the investigation. Authorities have not yet released a motive.
For Latter-day Saints, the news comes during an especially tender time, just one day after the passing of President Russell M. Nelson, who served as prophet and leader of the global church.
