Perks of being a college student

We're all counting pennies. I mean, are you really a college student if you don’t have your calculator app out when you’re grocery shopping? Well, here’s some good news: there are wayyy more student discounts and free resources out there than you might have thought. It’s time to start taking advantage of them!

BYU-Idaho alone has so much to offer. Let me list them for you!

WiFi & Study Spaces

Campus offers the best places to lock in and get stuff done. I personally love the third floor of the library because they have a designated quiet zone with lots of comfy, personal desks (you can eat your Chick-fil-A in there too). Oh, and there’s free wifi. Just sign in using your student account.

Printing

Buying a printer and ink can get expensive, and even in this digital age, you will still need to print occasionally. Printing services (by the University Store) are ridiculously cheap and easy to use. Also, in most buildings, there are stand-alone printers. They require your I-card and document uploads to Pharos Print.

Tutoring

The tutoring center on the second floor of the library is fantastic. There are free one-on-one and group tutoring sessions, and honestly, they are very helpful. Use BYU-Idaho's Student Guide site to schedule an appointment.

Library Resources

Study spaces, massive databases, thousands of books, academic journals, movies and free access to newspapers like The New York Times. They've got it all.

Gym Access & Fitness Classes

The BYUI gym in the Hart building is huge and has just about anything you could ever need for a great workout. And it’s free with student ID! Let’s not forget about all the free fitness classes too. High fitness, yoga, cycling, water aerobics — you name it, they've got it. Sign up for classes on the BYUI Student Activities page. Don't forget your BYUI-approved exercise clothing! You can always buy some at the University Store.

Student Phone Plan

Through the school, you can get some pretty cheap phone plans with all the major carriers. Definitely worth looking into to save an extra buck. Learn more on the University Store's site!

Mental Health Support

Always prioritize your health. Counseling services are free to students who are taking at least 6 credits and assigned to a track. Mental health medication management is also available for only $10 per visit. They have a variety of services that include individual therapy, couples therapy, group therapy, medication management, and online self-help resources. You can scedual an appointment on BYUI's Counseling Center page.

Student Health Services

Don’t have personal insurance? The Student Health Center offers some great affordable options. Students who are on the Student Health Plan will only be charged $10 for all covered benefits in a single appointment. For more information, visit BYUI's Student Health Center's website.

Student Activities

Service, performing arts, social events, outdoor activities, conferences, sports, and leadership opportunities. There is something for everyone to get spiritually, mentally, physically, and socially fit. You can find all upcoming events on the myBYUI website under "Events & Calendars". Get involved!

Beyond BYUI, there are deals and discounts all over that can be unlocked with your student email and I-card. I can’t possibly cover them all here, so a good rule of thumb is to always ask, whether shopping in person or online. The worst thing they can say is no, right?

But First, Local

Clothes, ice cream, massages, spray tans, vehicle maintenance, rings, dinner, counseling, dental, you name it. So many local businesses are here for you. Check out the whole list on the Rexburg Chamber of Commerce website.

Amazon Prime Student

Unlock the elite world of Amazon Prime services for free for your first 6 months, and only $7.49 a month (or $69 a year) for every month after. Free shipping, Prime Video, Amazon Music Prime, and more. Actually life-changing.

Spotify Premium Student with Hulu

Literally only $6.99 a month. For Spotify Premium AND Hulu.

Apple Music with Apple TV

Also only $6.99 a month. Enough said.

YouTube Premium

With their student plan, you get YouTube and YouTube Music ad-free for $8.99 a month. Pretty helpful for all those hours of YouTube tutorials you watch when trying to do your homework.

Peacock Premium

This includes all sports, TV shows, and movies for $5.99 a month. They have a great selection too (including some of the best sitcoms).

Walmart Plus

50% off a Walmart Plus membership! That’s $6.47 a month, or $49 for the whole year. You have to look at their website for the full list of benefits, but my personal favorite is free grocery delivery. Especially helpful if you don’t have a car.

Not all benefits come after you finish school, so enjoy the ones you get while you’re here.
