Police arrested a man at Porter Park on Sunday afternoon following multiple reports that he was using binoculars to watch women sunbathing, according to a post by the Rexburg Police Department.

A search of the man's phone revealed photos of women in the park, and police also found gloves and a roll of duct tape in his possession.

The incident occurred between 2 and 3 p.m. on June 29. Multiple people contacted dispatch about the man’s behavior, prompting officers to respond.

According to a statement posted on the department’s official Facebook page, the man “was using binoculars to watch girls sunbathing in the park.”

When officers located the suspect, he had binoculars and a camera. He reportedly gave a false name — “John” and became confrontational before attempting to flee.

“As the officers physically detained the suspect, he grew violent and began to strike them several times in the face and hands, as well as kneeing them in the chest,” the post said.

Police said the officers, trained in jiujitsu and arrest tactics, used a taser to subdue the suspect and take him into custody.

The department said it had spoken with several witnesses but is asking for additional individuals who may have been present at Porter Park between 2 and 3 p.m. on Sunday to come forward.

“If you were present at Porter Park … and witnessed suspicious activity, please contact the Rexburg Police Department,” the post said.

Witnesses can call dispatch at (208) 372-5001 or visit the department at 25 E Main St. during business hours.
