The Rexburg Police Department Facebook page posted a video on Thursday of a group of young people ding-dong ditching a home in Rexburg. The video has already accumulated over 100,000 views.
The "kids" in the video, recorded by a home security camera, wear ski-masks as they approached the front steps of a home, knocked on the door and sprinted away.
The Facebook post strongly advised against ding-dong ditching.
“As a point of safety for both residents and troublemaking teens, we strongly discourage showing up to someone’s house late at night in a large group wearing ski masks and purposefully trying to scare vulnerable residents,” the post read.
The subjects in the video didn’t appear to be violent or cause property damage, yet the department left ding-dong ditchers a fair warning about the risks.
“We’ll remind you that this is Idaho, and many homeowners don’t wait for a police response if they feel like they need to protect themselves and handle the situation,” the department wrote.
In the comment section, police added another video showing the same group from a different doorbell camera.
The video includes audio of the teens communicating about how to approach their ding-dong ditch.
While the department strongly advised against ding-dong ditching, some commenters disagreed.
“Ding-dong ditching is harmless and a wonderfully fun tradition,” Austin Vansickle commented publicly on the post.
Another commenter, James Park, questioned the severity of the situation.
“Is this just a ding-dong ditch scenario? They put masks on because they knew there were cameras, sure, but just from these videos, it looks like some teenagers just having fun by knocking on a door and running off,” wrote Park. “Did they vandalize anything? Is this an ongoing, repeated thing to the point of harassment?”
The official department account replied: “This has been ongoing at this particular residence for several years. No other homes in the area are targeted.”
The question of the perpetrators’ identities and the reason behind their decision to target the home remains unanswered, as additional information has not been made public.
