Russell M. Nelson, the oldest President in the history of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, has passed away at the age of 101.
Born Sept. 9, 1924, President Nelson served as a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles for 34 years before being sustained as the 17th President of the Church on Jan. 14, 2018.
He turned 101 years old earlier this month, and on Saturday night, September 27, Church Newsroom announced that he had passed away.
"With sorrow we announce that Russell M. Nelson, beloved President of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, passed away peacefully shortly after 10 p.m. MDT today at his home in Salt Lake City," said Church Newsroom.
During his tenure as church president, President Nelson announced over 200 new temples and gave memorable general conference talks such as "Peacemakers Needed" and "Think Celestial!"
The next President of the church, Dallin H. Oaks, will be sustained in the semi-annual General Conference next weekend.
