The Rexburg Community Theater is performing "The Importance of Being Earnest" this Friday, Saturday and Monday at 7 p.m. at the Veterans of Foreign Wars building, located at 480 W. Second N., Rexburg.

"The Importance of Being Earnest" is a British play full of situational comedy. It was written by Oscar Wilde in 1895, with a thousand performances since, and even three separate film adaptations.

"It's about a bunch of high-class British idiots getting into way more trouble than they need to, but having a gay old time," said Nick Dunlap, one of the directors of the production.

Nick Dunlap and his brother, Zach Dunlap, were given the opportunity to make this production happen by Rexburg Community Theatre.

“Zach and I started talking to RCT about doing this show, must have been November or December," Nick said. "They’ve given Zach a ton of runway. A long leash might be the best way to say it. We ran the casting, the rehearsal and the schedule. Honestly, it’s just been hugely collaborative."

"We chose Earnest because we like it a lot," Nick said.

A lot of the actors give the play high praise as well.

“I think it's always good to have an Oscar Wilde under your belt," said Addie Omzera, a theater major at BYU-Idaho in her junior year. "He was an incredible playwright and author. I think that 'The Importance of Being Earnest' is just such an important piece of literature.”

Eliza Fisher, another theater major at BYUI in her sophomore year, gave high praise to the humor of the show.

"The irony in this play is that none of the characters are being earnest; they are all telling lies," Fisher said. "They are all ending up in absolutely ridiculous situations. That is the irony, it is a wild goose chase through that idea, while showing the exact opposite."

The entire cast highlights the humor of the production.

“It’s a classic, and for good reason. I think it's the funniest play I’ve ever read," Nick said. "It’s just absurd. It's all the wonderful things that British comedy excels at, and I think it's a staple of the genre for a reason."

Cast members encourage community members to come see the show.

“Because everyone is so good and so talented. It’s so quick-witted," said Clara Bailie, a BYUI freshman in the production. "It’s good, easy listening and easy watching; it’s click humor that you’ll be able to get.”

For $30, audience members will receive seating, dinner and a show. Tickets are available on the Rexburg Community Theaters website.

“It’s a really great show, and a good deal for a dinner show, especially," said Kate Jensen, another theater major in the production. "There's a magic to live theater that you can’t get anywhere else, so I think that’s an experience that a lot of people are missing out on.”
