Rexburg's community theater will be presenting 'Seussical' at the Madison Junior High School beginning June 25.
The musical is inspired by the works of Dr. Seuss and includes numerous characters, including Horton the Elephant, The Cat in the Hat and Gertrude McFuzz.
'Seussical' director Ann Cluff said the show was a 'huge success' when the theater last did it 12 years ago, which is one of the reasons they decided to bring it back. She added that the show makes people feel good all over because of its fast pace, humor and lots of music.
"'Seussical' is almost more operetta, kind of like 'Joseph,'" Cluff said. "It's most of it is sung, and so there's a lot of music. There's a lot of dance. It's just one of those shows that everybody can go to. It's got comedy, it's got romance, it's got danger. It's just light-hearted, has a lot of energy."
Brynn Nelson, a high schooler going into her senior year, is the show's Gertrude McFuzz. Nelson described her character as a 'super sweet, awkward, but totally lovable bird' who is extremely insecure about her singular tail feather.

Nelson said she auditioned for the part of Gertrude McFuzz because she admired the character's arc and story.
"It really spoke to me and felt really relatable," Nelson said. "I thought not only would she be a really fun character to play, but also, I feel like with how much her story has touched me, I feel like it'd be like such a cool thing to help share that with other people."
Nelson said 'Seussical' is more than a fun and 'wacky wild show,' but a story from which both the actors and audience can learn.
"That's one of my favorite things about my character, is her transformation, and just learning to love yourself and realizing that you're so much more than your appearance," Nelson said. "And the person you are is surely what makes you so special and unique, and I think that's kind of the theme for all the characters in the show. ... I feel like the story can totally touch many people's hearts."

Cluff said the story will give audience members themes to think about relating to the real world.
"It gives you the opportunity to pause and think about some of the social issues that are occurring in the music hall between these two worlds, the worlds of the Jungle of Newell and Whoville," said Cluff. "There's a lot of messages about how it really doesn't matter who you are, or how small you are or how insignificant you may come across to others, you're real, you're valued and no matter how different you are, you're, as the song says, 'not alone in the universe.'"
Cluff said she has enjoyed working on this project and is proud of how far the cast has come.
"They have become a very tight, well-oiled working machine, and it's so fun for me to just sit there and kind of smile and say, 'Those are my babies,' Cluff said. "My proud point is just watching them become this cohesive group of entertainers who are having so much fun, and they're nailing it every time."
Tickets and more information regarding the performance can be found on the Rexburg Community Theater's website. Performances will begin at 7 p.m. on June 25, 26, 27 and 29 and at 2 p.m. on June 27.
