For many BYU–Idaho students, the Fourth of July means road trips, family barbecues, and hometown fireworks. But if you're spending the holiday in Rexburg, don't worry, you don't have to spend Independence Day scrolling through everyone else's Instagram stories.

Whether you're looking for a quick afternoon activity or an all-day adventure, here are four of the best Fourth of July celebrations within driving distance of campus.

1. Experience Rexburg's hometown celebration

If you want a classic small-town Fourth of July, you don't even have to leave town.

Rexburg's celebration includes a patriotic flag-raising ceremony, the annual Independence Day Parade through downtown, family activities, food vendors, and an evening fireworks show. The city also hosts events leading up to the holiday, including the Party in the Park as well as the America 250 Freedom Celebration happening at Madison High School on July 3, featuring country artist Russell Dickerson.

Perfect for: Students without a car or anyone wanting to stay close to campus.

2. Spend the day in Idaho Falls

If you're willing to make the 30-minute drive south, Idaho Falls offers one of the largest Independence Day celebrations in the region.

The day starts with the FireKracker 5K and Idaho's largest Fourth of July parade before moving into a full afternoon of activities at Riverfest. Expect food trucks, live music, vendors, bounce houses, games, and family entertainment along the Snake River.

The night ends with the famous Melaleuca Freedom Celebration. This is the last year of the firework show featuring more than 18,000 fireworks in what organizers describe as one of the largest fireworks displays west of the Mississippi.

Perfect for: Groups of friends looking to spend the entire day off campus.

3. Watch fireworks over Lava Hot Springs

Looking for something a little different?

About an hour and a half south of Rexburg, Lava Hot Springs combines one of Idaho's most popular summer destinations with a unique Fourth of July celebration.

Before the fireworks begin, visitors can participate in (or simply watch) the Great American Duck Race, a fundraiser where numbered rubber ducks race down the Portneuf River for cash prizes. At Dusk, head to the downtown Lava area, anywhere with a view of the North mountain, to watch the fireworks.

And if you're making the drive anyway, don't forget to cool off in the pools at the Lava Hot Springs Olympic Swimming Complex or relax in the hot pools.

4. Head north to Ashton's community celebration

If you enjoy small-town traditions, Ashton offers a full Independence Day celebration about an hour north of Rexburg.

Ashton is just south of the popular camping destination, Island Park. Festivities include community events throughout the day, local food, games and evening fireworks that bring together residents and visitors alike. It's a quieter alternative to larger celebrations while still offering plenty of patriotic fun. Hit the hiking trails in Island Park by day, then relax with your friends and watch the fireworks show in the evening.

Make the most of the fourth

While not everyone gets to spend the Fourth of July at home, that doesn't mean the holiday has to be boring. Whether you stay in Rexburg, catch the massive fireworks in Idaho Falls, soak in Lava Hot Springs or explore Ashton, East Idaho offers plenty of ways to celebrate.
