Whitney Justesen, a senior studying fine arts, will have one of her photographs displayed on a book cover for the second time.
Justesen said that the photo published on the first book was taken while visiting family.
“I went to my grandparent’s house and they have a really big property in Logan. It’s absolutely gorgeous with the mountains,” Justesen said. “The picture is just of me and my back is turned to the camera and I’m looking at the mountains.”
A publishing company found the photo on her blog and asked if they could use it on the cover of their book “In Search of Lucy,” by Lia Fairchild.
Despite her achievements, photography is a relatively new passion of Justesen’s.
“I started photography in April of 2009. I was on break from school and I was having kind of a lazy summer. I didn’t get many hours from my job, so I just actually took a camera as a kind of hobby,” Justesen said.
Justesen’s second cover will be for the book “Bolero,” by Joanie McDonnell, which will be released in September 2012. For this novel, the photograph depicts Justesen in her ballet shoes.
“I had always been more into visual art like painting and things like that growing , and I wanted to be a painter or an illustrator,” Justesen said. “So I just picked photography as a hobby, and as I’ve gone along, I’ve gotten more into it and trying new techniques.”
In the future, Justesen hopes to start a photography business primarily for engagement, wedding and senior photos. She also hopes to do some travel photography as well.
“At the beginning of the semester I actually went over to Europe for the school’s European humanities tour and it was great. Hopefully, I can use those photos for business as well,” Justesen said.
