Tropical Smoothie Cafe’s grand opening took place Thursday with a ribbon-cutting ceremony and discounted smoothies.

Janalyn Holt, president of the Rexburg Area Chamber of Commerce, kicked off the event with encouraging words.

“The Chamber has a special connection with this establishment because their daughter-in-law and Alex’s wife interned with us,” Holt said. “She told us they were thinking about doing this, so we are so excited.”

Alex Plummer is the general manager of the franchise. His parents, Nepal and Kelly Plummer, are the owners.

“We moved here almost eight years ago,” Alex Plummer said. “We’ve loved it the whole time. We’re really excited to be more involved in the community and hopefully bring some good, healthy, delicious food to everybody and provide a nice place to hang out.”

Members of the Chamber of Commerce had lunch at the smoothie shop, and Holt says they plan to return for more.

“All of us got to have a random sampling of the smoothies and the sandwiches. It’s awesome,” Holt said.

According to Holt, the Chamber’s purpose is to help businesses succeed.

“We want new businesses that come to Rexburg to feel supported,” Holt said. “It’s so nice when you have so many of the Chamber members to come and say who they’re from, be able to see the faces of the people opening their business so that when we see each other in the community we can interact. We can be friends outside. My husband and I used to own a business and I just know what it means to have community support.”

Throughout the three-day grand opening, customers can participate in a Plinko game. Customers who make a purchase can drop a token at the top of a vertical board with pegs in it. The token will fall down one of a few different paths and land on a prize. Prizes range from candy to coupon cards for one free smoothie per week for a year.

The Plinko game is available Thursday and Friday at noon and Saturday at 10 a.m. The game will continue each day until it reaches the prize limit.

On Friday, Tropical Smoothie Cafe will offer flatbread sandwiches for $3.99. On Saturday, they’ll offer $5 combos.

They will also sponsor the Carousel Summer Kickoff at Porter Park Friday, which runs from 4-8 p.m.
