The Idaho State Police confirmed in a press release Friday that an impaired driver was at fault for the fatal U.S. 20 highway crash that caused the deaths of seven people.
The driver had a blood alcohol content of 0.2. The legal limit is 0.08.
“This tragedy should be a wake-up call,” ISP Captain Chris Weadick said in the press release. “No one plans to cause a crash or take a life when they get behind the wheel, but choices have consequences. Impaired driving isn’t just illegal — it’s deadly. If you see someone unfit to drive, speak up. Lives depend on it.”
Alcohol-related crashes are one of the leading causes of traffic deaths in Idaho, according to the press release.
The press release included information on how to prevent fatal DUIs, including planning ahead and using a seatbelt, and encouraged drivers who observe erratic driving behavior to call the police at *ISP (*477) or 911.
