The presidential debate between Donald Trump and Kamala Harris identified similar stances between the campaigns. However, the vice presidential nominees may offer further insights to voters in the upcoming election in November.

The economy can be a significant topic for American citizens, and was mentioned in almost every issue debated.

Vance emphasizedthat focusing on the economy will benefit the prices of child care, health care and housing.

According to his closing statement, Walz promoted the idea of an "Opportunity Economy," which will be “a new day where everyone gets an opportunity.”

Walz mentioned Harris’s plan to give $6,000 dollars to families for the first year of each child’s life and that they advocate for the middle class.

Vance stated that closing the border to illegal immigration and bringing manufacturing jobs back to the United States will create more jobs for the middle class and protectwages. Vance speaking at the Vice Presidential Debate, Oct. 1, 2024. Photo credit: AP Photo/Matt Rourke

A theme in Vance's speech is that America needs to be safer —safer schools, safer borders and a more reliable economy, so families can feel more confident to have children. He promoted that the world was safer and had less violent conflict and unrest underTrump’s presidency.

Walz mentioned mental health challenges, , gun violence and the bill Harris and he aim to put into law —a bill to stem the flow of illegal immigration into the United States.

Vance acknowledged plans to seize federal land to build houses for families.

Walz acknowledged that “climate change is real” and advocated that Americans should protect their land.

Both candidates presented arguments that are notable for students and citizens of Idaho alike.
