There are few things worse than walking back to your car and seeing that bright yellow boot on your tire. Then, you have to call someone to take it off, pay a hundred-something dollars and waste an hour of your day. Wouldn’t it be so nice to have an all-in-one guide to parking? I got you!
City Parking Laws
There are five parking zones surrounding BYU-Idaho’s campus, each with different parking requirements: residential permit, university permit, O-permit, time-restricted parking and no parking.
Students can purchase a U-Parking permit online or at the Police Department. Those permits are required Monday-Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. After 5 p.m., you do not need a pass. However, parking on city streets for longer than 48 hours will mark your vehicle as abandoned and could be towed or ticketed at your expense.
For time-restricted parking spots, you cannot park longer than the designated time, and moving to a new spot on the same street does not extend your time. These spots are never open for parking between 2 a.m. and 7 a.m.
And a note for the winter semester: overnight parking is prohibited from December 15 to March 1. Whether it snows or not.
Campus Parking
There are eight color-coded lots that each require their own parking pass from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. on weekdays. Before 7 a.m. and after 4 p.m., you are free to park anywhere. However, there is no parking allowed from 1 a.m. to 4 a.m., even with a pass. You can only get one parking pass per student.
Parking is not enforced on holidays, weekends, semester breaks, and during summer.
Apartment Complex Parking
If you want to park at a friend’s complex while you’re hanging out, make sure to check the complex's website for their parking rules. If rules aren't on the site you can even ask your friend what the parking situation is like. Most places will require a visitor pass or have a designated, time-restricted visitor parking area. At the end of the day, it’s better to be safe than sorry!
